Careers

DO I NEED A SCIENCE QUALIFICATION?

One of the most common questions asked during course choices is 'What subjects do I need if I want to be a ......... when I leave school?'.

Obviously there are some careers that obvious links to Science (such as a Science teacher, rocket scientist, etc.), but there are many more careers that require the skills that a Science qualification can provide: games developer, chef, business manager, etc.

SKILLS In SCIENCE

When you study Science, you develop many transferrable skills: working as part of a team, planning, evaluating, predicting, handling data, making sense of information, presenting findings to others, numeracy, literacy, logical thought processes, to name but a few!

Most employers, colleges and universities look for Science qualification not because they need you to describe the subatomic particles, explain how an electrical circuit works or describe the workings of a cell, but because a science qualification shows that you have certain desirable skills that can be applied to new situations. Scientists are the problem solvers who can make sense of information given to them.
