Using macros and micros to organise writing is a good way for students to become familiarised by how to plan writing and set out their work in paragraphs.
Macro groups refer to the broad subject or category, e.g., fish, vegetables, cats etc.
Micro groups can be considered as sub-categories or divisions that refer to more specific aspects of the macro group, such as fish: cods, haddocks, sardines; vegetables: lettuce, carrots, peas or cats: tabby, ginger, tortoiseshell etc.
Using micro groups to help write paragraphs ensures students focus the contents of each paragraph on one topic or situation.
