The key aspects of an Explanation text are...

• The writing explains how or why a process or phenomena or event occurs/ocurred. 

• Writing may be in the form of sequential steps, but this depends on the topic (how a volcano erupts vs a historical event explanation, etc).

• Visual literacy is used to illustrate concepts or processes.

• Language is formal and often in passive voice and present tense, but again this is dependant on topic. Technical language predominates, utilising subject-specific technical nouns (atmosphere), noun-groups (gas giant) and adjectives (solar).
