What the Service Does:
The Neurodevelopmental Pathway (ND Pathway) in East Lothian is the name for the series of steps that are followed when a child or young person is being assessed for one or more neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Learning/ Intellectual Disability (LD or ID), Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
It takes a holistic approach to the assessment of a child/ young person’s needs. This approach reduces the need for a family to explain their story repeatedly and the child/ young person is only on one waiting list, rather than multiple ones for different neurodevelopmental conditions.
Age Range: From 0-18 years
How to Access: Request for Assistance (RFA) for this service can be made via the appropriate NHS mailbox dependant on age of the child.
Referrals for children aged 7 and over should be emailed to: loth.CAMHSeastlothianreferrals@nhs.scot
Referrals for children aged under 7 should be sent to loth.childrenswaitinglistteam@nhs.scot
Important Information Re. School Role in ND Assessment Requests
When parents, carers or young people are seeking an ND assessment the ND RFA form can be completed and sent in by any key professional e.g. GP, Teachers, Health Visitors and other health professionals. There is no requirement for school staff to fulfil this role.
When an ND RFA is made and educational information is required, if the child or young person is at an additional or targeted level the current Child Planning Framework paperwork will provide the educational contribution to the process.
When children and young people are at a universal level school staff should advise parents, carers and/or young people of this. Parents, carers and young people can submit any available paperwork from this stage in the process e.g. Child / Young Person's (C/YP) Minute and Action Plan, Wellbeing Concern Forms etc. It should be noted that universal level support does not align with evidence of a significant impact on day-to-day functioning in school.
Why is there a new optional parental views form?
We sometimes find that we do not have enough information from parents about their views or concerns and that there is not enough information about the presentation at home.
For this reason, we have introduced an optional ‘Parent ND Additional Information’ form to be included with the RfA. This consists of questions that parents can complete independently and should be submitted along with the RfA form. All parents should be given the opportunity to fill this out so their views can be heard.
UPDATE on use of the CAIDS-Q for Learning Disability/ Intellectual Disability Assessment Requests
NHS Lothian have advised us that the CAIDS-Q is no longer available as a free to use resource.
NHS Lothian are currently developing a new PanLothian ND RfA form which will take account of this change.
Until this happens, please continue to use this ND Assessment Form which has been updated to remove this requirement. Please be advised that the link will no longer work, and until further advised, this is no longer required as part of a request for an ID/ LD assessment under the ND Pathway.
Please share this will all staff who make ND referrals.
There is a different presentation at home
It is unclear if an ND assessment is appropriate
