Introduction to Python programming for academic research

Python is an open-source, general-purpose programming language, currently used in many domains. Specifically, it plays a major role in the domain of data science and machine learning, with a wide user base both in the industry and academia. Python offers a straightforward design, readable syntax, and an abundance of online learning resources.

These features make Python a good fit for researchers who lack programming background, aiding in most stages of quantitative research performed in academia – from running experiments and simulations to analyzing, plotting, and reporting data.

The workshop will include two sessions, during which we will cover:

• Python basics - Data structures, functions, control flow

• Data manipulation - Importing, preprocessing, and exploring tabular data

• Data visualization and statistical analysis

Each session will include hands-on work. The workshop assumes a basic knowledge of statistics and some experience in data analysis. No prior programming experience is required. The workshop will be given in Hebrew, but all learning materials (Code, presentations, etc.) will be in English.

Python היא שפת תכנות לשימוש כללי. על אף שהיא נמצאת בשימוש בתחומים רבים, היא בעלת תפקיד מרכזי בעולם מדע הנתונים ולמידת מכונה, ופופולרית מאוד הן בתעשייה והן באקדמיה. Python היא שפה יחסית ברורה, בעלת תחביר קרוב לאנגלית. מעבר לכך, קיימים שפע משאבי למידה מקוונים אשר ניתן באמצעותם ללמוד את השפה.

כשפה נגישה במיוחד עבור חוקרים וחוקרות שאינם בעלי רקע בתכנות, שליטה ב־Python יכולה לסייע ברוב שלבי המחקר הכמותי באקדמיה - החל מהרצת ניסויים וסימולציות, וכלה בניתוח, הצגה ודיווח על נתונים. הסדנה תקנה למשתתפים/ות ידע מבואי בניתוח נתונים באמצעות Python ותכלול שני מפגשים, במהלכם נעבור על:

•  שליטה בסיסית ב־Python מבני נתונים, פונקציות, בקרת זרימה

• ייבוא, עיבוד מקדים ואקספלורציה של דאטה

• ויזואליזציה של דאטה ועיבודים סטטיסטיים

כל מפגש יכלול עבודה מעשית. נדרש ידע בסיסי בסטטיסטיקה וניסיון בניתוח נתונים. אין צורך בניסיון קודם בתכנות. הסדנה תועבר בעברית אך חומרי הסדנה (קוד, מצגות וכדומה) הם באנגלית.
