Prework

Students who are working successfully on Elementary competencies and are 15 years of age on September 30th, are eligible for the three-year Pre-Work Program. The ministry provides an alternative workload for these students that is focused on developing both work and life skills.

Year 1: The students stay within the school experiencing work-related activities under the guidance of their teachers. A student's workload focuses on developing skills needed to secure and hold a job while learning to live independently.

Year 2: During the second year of Pre-work, the students secure a work placement where they are evaluated on their performance based on program competencies. The teacher helps support students in finding suitable jobs that fit their interests and abilities. The students will need to complete 300 hours of work during this second year of the program.

Year 3: The students are expected to show more autonomy with finding their own job. They are required to complete a minimum of 600 hours of work during the final year of the program. After successfully completing the three years, students will receive a Pre-Work certificate, recognized by the government.

Students are never “stuck” in the Pre-Work program. Once a student passes the requirements for Grade 6, they can move from the Pre-work program to the Semi-skilled program.

* In special circumstances, students can complete the academics of Pre-work while following the work portion of the Semi-skilled program.
