When a student is close to succeeding Grade 6 competencies, they can either repeat Grade 6 at their elementary school or they can be placed in a modified program (MP) Grade 6 group at Alexander Galt.
The students receive a nine periods a cycle (every two weeks) rather than six periods of English and Math, as well as classes in Science, Social Studies, French, ERC, gym and an elective (art, drama or music).
The students are taught by a smaller team of teachers and have the majority of their classes in the same room. They share a classroom with the Adapted Regular class and are taught by a team-teacher approach.
The school staff considers a student's academic ability, motivation, age and programs available and will recommend one of the following options:
1. The MP student is recommended for Level 1 Regular. (For students ages 13-14 on September 30th of the next school year who have progressed significantly in their academics.)
2. The MP student is recommended to Level 1 ARP. (If this program is available, the student demonstrates motivation but is younger than 15 years of age. The student still needs extra support in literacy and arithmetics.)
3. When an MP student turns 15 years of age on September 30th, they are recommended to pursue the Prework or Semi-Skilled Program. These programs are designed to prepare students for direct entry into the workplace or admission to some apprenticeship programs and other training programs.
