When a student has been promoted from Grade 6 to Secondary Level 1, their elementary teachers can recommend the need for extra support with literacy and arithmetic. A recommended student will be selected for Galt's Adapted Regular Program (ARP).
Students in ARP follow the Secondary Level 1 curriculum, but have an increased number of Language Arts and Math classes. Students still take classes in French, Science, ERC, Social Studies, Gym and an elective (art, music or drama.) Students are taught by a small team of teachers and have the majority of their classes in the same room.
The school staff considers a student's academic ability, motivation, age and programs available and will recommend one of the following options:
A. The ARP student can be recommended for Level 2 Regular. (this is an exceptional situation requiring significant academic progress and motivation.)
B. The ARP student can be recommended to Level 2 ARP. (If this program is available, the student demonstrates motivation and is younger than 15 years of age, but needs increased literacy and arithmetic support.)
C. If an ARP student has not yet met the level 1 academic requirements, they may be recommended for Level 1 Regular (For students ages 13-14 on September 30th of the next school year who have progressed academically.)
D. If a student turns 15 years of age the following school year, they have the option of, Semi-skilled (with a focused workload on Level 2 Math, English and French.)
E. An Adapted Regular Program Level 2 student can be promoted to Regular Level 3 or, if interested in vocational studies, the 15+ program.
