*The number and composition of modified groups change yearly depending on staffing resources, student needs, and enrollment numbers. *
When students are faced with academic expectations that exceed their abilities, putting them into a position where failure becomes natural, frustration and a sense of helplessness develops. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended that students be placed in a classroom with peers of similar abilities.
Within these modified groups, the students receive an increased number of English and Math classes. The students have fewer transitions between teachers and classrooms providing more consistency and attachment.
Teachers of modified groups focus on providing work at the student’s level. As a student’s academic level improves, they can move from their group to one that is more challenging. Students in modified programs do not have to be “stuck” in modified for their entire schooling when they progress academically.
Resource teachers support classroom teachers by providing placement testing, such as: KeyMath, Woodcock Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Reading Assessment.
Modified classes are offered to students who are working below grade level. These courses are intended to enable students to gain the necessary skills required to be successful academically and to prepare for entrance into the workplace.
Modified classes meet educational needs not met by provincial curriculum policy documents. These classes are for students who need additional support in academic core subjects (English, Mathematics and French)
Once a student in a modified class turns 15 years of age they can enter the Work Oriented Training Path (WOTP.)
These programs prepare students for direct entry into the workplace or admission to some apprenticeship programs and other training programs.
