LEARNING DISABILITIES

Result from:

  • environmental factors ( ex. low socio-economic status)

  • family factors (ex. inadequate reading habits)

  • personal factors (ex. lack of motivation)

  • school factors (ex. less effective teaching method)

Result from neurological damage that affect the cognitive functions involved in

  • oral language

  • reading

  • writing

  • mathematics

Learning disabilities are permanent in nature.

Examples of learning disabilities:

Dyslexia- dysorthographia : problems with spelling and accurate, fluid identification of written words

Dyscalculia: disability that is specific to numbers and calculations.

Dyspraxia/ Developmental coordination disability (DCD): poor performance in activities requiring motor coordination

Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD): caused by anomalies of the white matter in the right hemisphere of the brain. It is characterized by neurocognitive disabilities affecting perception, analysis, memory, understanding, organization and use of verbal and non-verbal information
