In her book, Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer says, “Learning the names of plants and animals is a powerful act of support for them. When we learn their names and their gifts, it opens the door to reciprocity.”
To help our students learn about the plants and fungi who live on our schoolyards, the Indigenous Education Team has developed Roots and Relations cards. There are two sets of Roots and Relations cards:
K-grade 3
Grade 4-12
Each school has been gifted a set of Roots and Relations cards. The cards have been catalogued and they are available in the professional resource section of every school library in the A.M.D.S.B.
Caregivers and educators are encouraged to print their own set of Roots and Relations cards from the files below.
French: Racines et Relations
So students can learn about the plants and fungi on their schoolyards in French, a group of French teachers in the A.M.D.S.B. translated the Roots and Relations cards. There are 2 versions of the French cards: one simpler and one more complex.
Each school has been gifted a set of Racines et Relations cards. The cards will be catalogued in Insignia and they will be available in the professional resource section of every school library in the A.M.D.S.B. later this spring.
If you would like to print your own set of Racines et Relations cards, please download the PDF files below.
Winter Tree ID
The Indigenous Education Team has designed a placemat to take outside in the winter to identify local trees. One side of the placemat shows you how to use buds and bark to identify deciduous trees, and the other side show you how to use needles and cones to identify coniferous trees.
