In her book, Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer says, “Learning the names of plants and animals is a powerful act of support for them. When we learn their names and their gifts, it opens the door to reciprocity.”
To help our students learn about the plants and fungi who live on our schoolyards, the Indigenous Education Team has developed Roots and Relations cards. There are two sets of Roots and Relations cards:
K-grade 3
Grade 4-12
Each school has been gifted a set of Roots and Relations cards. The cards have been catalogued in Destiny and they are available in the professional resource section of every school library in the A.M.D.S.B.
Caregivers and educators are encouraged to print their own set of Roots and Relations cards from the files below.
NEW TOOL!
The Indigenous Education Team has designed a placemat to take outside in the winter to identify local trees. One side of the placemat shows you how to use buds and bark to identify deciduous trees, and the other side show you how to use needles and cones to identify coniferous trees.
