Every secondary school in the A.M.D.S.B. has an Indigenous Student Council. Indigenous Student Councils invite students to share, develop leadership skills, and work together to Indiginize their schools.
Each of the Student Councils send representatives to the A.M.D.S.B. Student Grand Council. The Grand Council amplifies Indigenous voices, ensuring that their perspectives are integral in decision-making.
Student and Grand Councils empower students to actively shape their educational experiences and provide students with a platform to engage in non-colonial models of leadership. By participating in these councils, students are empowered to meaningfully and directly contribute and to represent their unique perspectives.
Indigenous Student Councils aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of Indigenous community leadership. By providing a space for students to authentically explore and learn about their unique ways of leading, these Councils foster a sense of cultural identity and empowerment.
The Indigenous Student Grand Council has elected D.C.V.I. student Molly Linklater to be the first ever Indigenous Student Trustee.
The Indigenous Student Trustee position was established through collaborative conversations among senior leadership, including the Director of Education, Indigenous Education leadership, and the Board of Trustees. This role reflects a shared commitment to ensuring Indigenous students have a formal, respected space at the governance table to bring forward their voices, perspectives, and priorities. The creation of the position demonstrates the system’s ongoing efforts to listen to Indigenous youth and respond with meaningful action.
