The Indigenous Education Team is committed to Indigenizing learning throughout the A.M.D.S.B.
Oversees all Indigenous services and needs across the system, ensuring a comprehensive approach to education aligned with culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining pedagogy (C.R.R.S.P.);
Collaborates with senior administration, school staff, and the Indigenous Education Advisory Council to improve Indigenous student achievement and well-being, focusing on measurable outcomes and accountability;
Promotes understanding of Indigenous history and traditions through the effective implementation of educational resources;
Builds and develops relationships with Indigenous communities, Elders, and Knowledge Carriers to integrate their perspectives and teachings into educational practices;
Implements and monitors Indigenous programming that fosters self-identification among students and families, ensuring alignment with Truth and Reconciliation Commission (T.R.C.) Calls to Action; and
Oversees budget allocation for Indigenous education initiatives, ensuring resources are effectively utilized to support the needs of Indigenous students.
Builds trust with Indigenous students (Grades K-12) through mentorship rooted in cultural teachings and traditions;
Provides support in transition and pathway planning, system navigation, and access to community and school resources;
Collaborates with school teams to ensure holistic support for Indigenous students;
Advocates for Indigenous voices, promoting cultural awareness, identity, and traditional practices within schools;
Supports student well-being and success by addressing barriers and advocating for culturally safe spaces within the school environment;
Monitors academic progress and attendance, offering support to keep students on track for graduation; and
Collaborates with families to build trust and foster strong home-school connections that support students’ academic and personal growth.
Plans and delivers professional development aligned with T.R.C. Calls to Action 62 and 63, enhancing staff understanding of Indigenous perspectives;
Collaborates with educators to embed Indigenous ways of knowing into curriculum, supporting reconciliation through education;
Supports staff with small group planning, co-teaching, and resource sharing to create culturally responsive learning environments;
Builds staff capacity and confidence in teaching Indigenous content, ensuring respectful and accurate representation;
Mentors and coaches educators in implementing Indigenous perspectives, fostering sustained professional growth; and
Monitors and provides feedback on Indigenous education initiatives to support continuous improvement and alignment with reconciliation efforts.
Provides professional development for educators, helping them to connect with the land and to integrate outdoor learning in all seasons and across the curriculum.
Collaborates with educators to plan and implement local outdoor learning experiences;
Supports the integration of experiential learning on the land to deepen students' understanding of and connection to the places where they live and learn;
Partners with Indigenous educators to provide land-based learning opportunities; and
Facilitates the development of ecological literacy and caring attachments to the land in staff and students.
Collaborates with the Indigenous Education team to co-develop and implement professional learning that helps educators confidently bring Indigenous perspectives into their teaching.
Leads the development of Indigenous education initiatives across the district.
Ensures Indigenous education initiatives align with culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining pedagogy and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
Provides leadership in policy development to ensure Indigenous rights, knowledge, and self-determination are respected in educational practices
Works alongside Indigenous partners, educators, and school leaders to create learning environments where Indigenous students feel valued, seen, and supported.
Oversees strategic planning, budgeting, and resource allocation to ensure Indigenous education programs have a lasting impact.
Uses data-informed approaches to support Indigenous student success, balancing academic achievement with well-being, cultural identity, and community connection.
Advocates for Indigenous education to remain central to district priorities.
