Week 4
How do seeds germination rates change in salt water?
How do seeds germination rates change in salt water?
to investigate the effect of salinity on the germination of seeds
to structure and write a practical report documenting an experiment
Knowledge & understanding
Using our understanding of the purpose, process and conditions for germination developing an extensive hypothesis for investigating the investigating germination in salt water.
Investigation Skills
Plan and complete an investigation into germination of seeds in salt water.
Knowledge and understanding
A hypothesis is a statement that can be tested by scientific research. If you want to test a relationship between two or more variables, you need to write hypotheses before you start your experiment or data collection.
Hypotheses propose a relationship between two or more types of variables.
An independent variable is something the researcher changes or controls.
A dependent variable is something the researcher observes and measures.
To identify the variables, you can write a simple prediction in if…then form. The first part of the sentence states the independent variable and the second part states the dependent variable.
e.g. If a Year 7 student starts completing more classwork, then their exam scores will improve. (more classwork is the IV, exam scores are the DV)
What is the IV in the seed germination experiment? What is the DV?
Using your understanding of the purpose, process and conditions for germination and what you know about solutions and osmosis explain why you think you will get the results you expect.
