Performing Arts Subjects

Dance: Movement Motifs & Styles

Semester 1

Students will engage in a range of workshops that explore the elements of dance with a range of choreographic devices, including: abstraction, sequence, repetition, transition, contrast, variation and canon. Students will get the opportunity to improve their technical skills of control, coordination, accuracy, alignment, balance, flexibility, strength, endurance and articulation when moving as they develop safe dance practices.

Dance: Expressive Skills & Viewpoints

Semester 2

Combining technical and expressive skills, students will have the opportunity to develop, choreograph, perform, reflect and appreciate various dance forms. They manipulate the element of dance and choreographic devices to explore personal style using movement motifs. Choosing dance, students will have the opportunity to perform at the Canberra Theatre in student led Dance Festival production.

Drama: Directors

Semester 1

A comprehensive unit to develop students directing skills and expand their performance toolbox. They will consider the elements that contribute to creating theatre for performance. Each student will have an opportunity to direct a group of students to achieve a set performance. Learn how to direct others through their use of voice and movement to create a short scripted piece for performance.

Drama: Stagecraft & Threatre Design

Semester 2

Discover the world behind the stage: set design, lighting, sound, costume design and make-up are all elements that help create a standout performance. Students will explore each of the skills of stagecraft before selecting an element they would like to focus on. The class will then work on creating the sets, costumes, lighting, sound and staging for the Drama Production.

Music: Composing & Notation

Semester 1

Composing will enable students to look at different ways of composing a piece of music. They will explore line, shape, color and texture and compose pieces of music with the use of Art rather than traditional notation. Students will research graphic scores and analyse them to enhance their own development of a graphic score. Students will perform their composition at the Exhibition of Learning at the end of the semester.

Music: The Music Industry

Semester 2

The music industry will give students the opportunity to realise where music can take them in the future. They will research a particular field that music is used in and discover the many areas that music is used in the world. Students will also undertake theory lessons and will chose a future avenue in the music industry and develop the necessary skills for that particular area after researching that field.

Visual Arts Subjects

Media Arts : Digital Photography & Imaging

Semester 1 & 2

Working individually and in groups, using DSLR cameras and Photoshop software on Mac computers, students will design and produce photographic works for different audiences and contexts. Students will learn how to take control of the camera as they explore photography both as an art form and as visual communication. Students will learn how to adjust, manipulate and manage images. Students will analyse and evaluate how meaning, values and points of view are conveyed in the photography you make and view.

Media Arts : Moving Imaging (Extension)

Semester 1 & 2

This unit is intended for students who have successfully completed Digital Photgraphy or Getting into Graphic Design units. Learning in this unit involves making and responding to video media artworks. Through individual and group work, students have the opportunity to plan and create short video and animated works with software such as Photoshop, iMovie or Adobe Premier. They analyse how meaning, values and points of view are conveyed through the manipulation of elements, conventions and style in video.

Visual Arts : Art Attack

Semester 1 & 2

Students build on the skills, techniques and processes developed in earlier year levels. They have the opportunity to explore drawing, painting, assemblage or pottery, mixed media and digital imaging. Students consider the styles, techniques, practices and viewpoints of selected modern and contemporary artists and designers and apply their understanding of other art to enrich and inform their capacity to create meaning and intention in own artworks.

Visual Arts : Colour & Contemporary Painting (Extension)

Semester 1 & 2

Students build on knowledge and skills acquired in a previous Visual Art unit. They explore composition and expression through colour as they develop and refine representations through painting and drawing. Students are encouraged to integrate individual areas of interest from other subjects areas into their own artwork. They examine artworks by painters and explore different viewpoints.
