Performing Arts Subjects

Dance: Choreographic Devices

Semester 1

In this unit students will undertake practical dance workshops that allow them to experiment with the elements of dance and explore choreographic intent. Students will create a movement vocabulary by exploring a range of style-specific techniques, while developing safe dance techniques. They will get the opportunity to improve their technical skills such as control, coordination, accuracy, alignment, balance, flexibility, strength, endurance and articulation.

Semester 2

Students will practice and refine their expressive skills with a range of performance options. Students will have the opportunity to perform at the Canberra Theatre in a student-led dance festival. They will develop, choreograph, perform, reflect and appreciate various dance forms and cultures.

Drama: Dramatic Elements

Semester 1

Acting, movement and vocal skills combine as students explore short scenes on a range of topics. They will participate in fun and engaging performance exercises to develop and share their original ideas with others. Students will practice movement and performance skills through physical games, exercises and training. They will have the opportunity to present scenes and performance work in front of an audience and take command of their physical presence on stage.

Drama: Impro and Comedy

Semester 2

Students will learn improvisation and creative storytelling techniques to unlock their imagination and step into the world of comedy. Through participation in improvised scene work students will develop basic acting techniques, and discover new stories, ideas and adventures through improvisational exercises. They will learn the skills of comedy and the art of making people laugh. Students will share their learning at a performance at the end of the semester.

Music: World Music

Semester 1

Students will learn and practice basic and intermediate percussion rhythms from India, Africa and South America. They will develop their own percussion performances incorporating one or more of the styles. Students will create their pieces individually and in small groups, progressing towards a performance of their piece to an audience.

Music: Stories Through Music

Semester 2

This unit encourages students to become creative and responsive musicians. They will consider the elements needed to tell a story through music. Students investigate mood, tempo, style and expression in music, and create music to accompany a children’s book that reflects the ideas and characters in the story. Students will have the opportunity to create their own story through song lyrics or poetry, and will compose a piece of music that will tell the story.

Media Arts: Digital Photography

Semester 1 & 2

In this unit students learn how to operate a DSLR camera to capture high-quality photographs and about the importance of file management.Students will make and respond to photographic works for different audiences and contexts. Through individual and group work, students will learn to use photographic equipment and Photoshop software. They explore photography as an art form and as a visual communication tool. They examine how meaning, values and points of view are conveyed in photography.

Media Arts: Create for Screen (Extension)

Semester 1 & 2

In this unit students will build on the knowledge, skills and techniques introduced in previous units. With a special focus on creating for screen, they will explore aspects of making video, animation and motion graphics. Students will explore different types of animation and learn aspects of capturing and editing video footage. Students will use story-boarding to plan their media works. Students will create short media works to tell a story, communicate information or express a specific emotion.

Visual Arts: Pottery & Sculpture

Semester 1 & 2

In this unit students will focus on making artworks with 3D media: pottery, construction, assemblage. They will have the opportunity to create design concepts using computer and making models for large architectural and environmental sculpture. Students will practice skills and techniques and develop their own representations of subjects, themes and concepts. Further develop their knowledge by researching how artists have explored these themes in the past themselves in order to inform and enrich their own artmaking.

Visual Arts: Print Paint Photograph (Extension)

Semester 1 & 2

This unit focuses on making artworks with 2D media: drawing, painting, printing and photography. Students will practice skills and techniques to develop their own representations of subjects, themes and concepts. They will have the opportunity to select from a range of subjects and themes. Students will develop their knowledge by researching how artists have explored these themes in order to inform and enrich their own artmaking.
