PRACTICE ROUTINE
Practice 4-5 days per week, 15-20 minutes each day. Below is what each day should look like:
Warm-up: 1-2 Minutes - Play your D-Major Scale 3x by memory. Focus on watching your setup, finger position, bow position, etc. to make sure you are doing your technique to the best of your ability before playing music out of your book.
Practice: (Say, Sing, Play 5x): 14-16 minutes
Perform: a piece for someone or play-along with the IPS app: 1-2 minutes
Pg 21 is an extension of what was learned on page 13. Work through these great pieces of music continue to build your music reading skills and familiarity with the D-Major Scale. In #103, we learn a new type of duet, called a Round.
To make one continuous D-Major Scale on the bass, we need to learn how to shift our left hand up the instrument. By shifting our hand up the neck (actually down, but we call it up because the pitches go higher) we are able to expand the range of our instrument. On Pg 21 we will learn 3rd position on the G-String to be able to play the high C# and high D, allowing us to play though the full D-Major scale without having to jump down in the middle of the scale.
Mr. Williams discusses the why, how, and when to use the 4th finger alternative fingering on your violin or viola to play A.
This page focuses primarily on violins and violas learning an alternative way to play the note A. This is done by using your pinky (4th finger) on the D-String. Watch the video on 4th finger first, then watch this video on how to apply that new skill to the music on page 21.
`Cello and bass students get a break on learning new technique, and just get to hang out and play some awesome new pieces of music, including Beethoven's 9th Symphony - Ode to Joy!
Beethoven's 9th Symphony - IV: "Ode to Joy" (Full 25 minute long version) - Fulsom Symphony Orchestra
Ode To Joy - Andre Rieu
Ants Marching / Ode to Joy - The Piano Guys
Ode to Joy - The Muppets
On page 23 we get to combine all of the skills we've learned so far with all of the notes from the D-Major scale and our new 4th fingers (for violins and violas) into these 4 outstanding musical selections. Mr. Williams talks about the details of each piece and what things to watch out for while practicing. Don't forget to use your practice strategies when you need them. There are also links for full performances of both the Canon in D and the Brandenberg.
Mr. Williams talks about how to read and play music in duets or orchestra arrangements as you prepare them for performance.
