FLASH CARDS
As we get more notes on our instrument, it's very important that we are able to quickly and accurately read and perform our notes. Using Flashcards and/or Note Reading Apps are an important part of your musical development at this point in the school year. Make sure you are warming up with either flashcards or an app daily. For more information on using flashcards, downloads, and app information, visit the Reading Music Page.
PRACTICE ROUTINE
Practice 4-5 days per week, 15-20 minutes each day. Below is what each day should look like:
Warm-up: 3-4 Minutes (Flash Cards)Practice (Say, Sing, Play 5x): 13-15 minutesPerform a piece for someone or play-along with the IPS app: 1-2 minutes
On page 11 we continue to add new notes to our instruments, it allows us to have so many more pieces of music we can play. For violin, viola, and `cello, B is the first fingered note on our A string, played the same way as the E is on the D-String. For bass players, we play B on the G-String with 4 fingers, similarly to your F# on the D-String.
On page 20 we get to continue to use our new note B in a bunch of different pieces of music, including "London Bridge." This is a great page to practice with the IPS accompaniments. You also get the opportunity to show off your creativity and composition skills at the bottom of the page.
One more note until we get all the notes required to play a full D-Major Scale! On this page, you are introduced to your C#, played on the A-String. The C# is played similarly to the F#. Violins and violas use 2 fingers on the A-String, `Cellos play 3 fingers on the A-String, and Basses play 4 fingers on the A-String. #48-51 use only the three notes on the A-String. #52 combines all 7 notes together in one amazing piece.
On page 13, we add the last note to complete your full D-Major Scale - high D on the A-String. As we've discussed before, there are multiples of each letter in music. You repeat the same letter every eight notes, or octave (abbreviated 8va). By adding the second D into our scale, we now have a total of 8 notes in a row to create the scale. Because we have the F# and C# in the key signature, that makes this the D-Major scale (D E F# G A B C# D or Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do). We learn two versions of the D-Major scale and then several pieces of music that utilize all 8 notes in the piece.
See the video below for more info on the D-Major Scale.
