Crash Reconstruction

The CCRLEC Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team is made up of 38 member officers representing each department on the Cape and 3 members from Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation who assist us with photography, evidence collections, and Event Data Recorder data extraction.  We are available to assist departments in the investigation of serious injury and fatal motor vehicle crashes of all kinds.  All of our members are trained crash reconstructionists, and several of our members have specialized training for Heavy Trucks, Motorcycles, Pedestrian, and Bicycle crash investigation.  Due to the extensive training our members have received we are able to break down the elements of a crash to 1/100th of a second in most cases and create an intricate, accurate recreation of the crash.  This allows us to determine who was at fault, to what degree they were at fault, and whether or not a crash could have been avoided.  

Traffic Crash Reconstruction is very demanding, detail oriented, and time consuming.  Over the years the training needed for our members has become more readily available but is still incredibly expensive.    Using the collaborative resources of the member towns, we are able to investigate serious motor vehicle crashes in a timely manner and share our collective knowledge to determine the actual cause of a collision.
