Medium: Collage
Dimension: 35 x 28 cm
Statement of Intent:
This is a collage of myself. The collage itself is inspired by a childhood photo during halloween, where I was dressed as a princess. It was the peak of imagination, and I wanted to capture this in the collage by having vibrant colors, and the extreme use of florals to capture a majestical tone.
Medium: Oil
Dimension: 45.7 x 60.9 cm
Statement of Intent:
This is an appropriation of Jack Vettriano’s “The Singing Butler''. The original painting showcases a couple dancing on the beach with their butler serenading them as they dance. What I wanted to do is switch the high-class couple with Mexican traditional dancers to display that not only people of color can be considered classy, but that culture is much richer than money.
Medium: Wood, nails, string
Dimension: 52x28cm
Statement of Intent:
Life is known to be high strung and stressful. The Bailadora has become a personal symbol to me. It is a representation of all the things I can be. Especially here, even though technically she is “high strung” her fluidity captures a rather flexible and positive essence. She shows me that while life is stressful, if done right, it can be everything.
Medium: Mosaic
Dimension: 49.5 x 41 cm
Statement of Intent:
Here, once again there is the element of the Bailadora. However, I wanted to experiment and put the main focus on the movement of her skirt. With tiles, they are such stiff and rigid material so I wanted the movement to still flow, which is accomplished in an abstract manner.
Medium: Sharpies
Dimension: 55.8 x 71 cm
Statement of Intent:
This is a dysmorphic self portrait. In the process of creating the piece, I was more focused on the shadows of my face, which tended to revolve around the sharper corners of the face. Even though it is not exactly my face, the ferocity and vibrancy of the colors are me, which is the essence of the piece.
Medium: Water Color
Dimension: 35 x 28 cm
Statement of Intent:
The piece is based off of the church in my parent’s hometown. It is the same church, yet when I showed my parents the real photo they were shocked to see it painted orange. In their time it was white. This fact stuck with me, because even though the church is both of ours, this colorful one belongs solely to me. Hence, the name Mi Iglesia.
