This peice represents the negative role of technology of most people living in the 21st century. Nowadays, technology has incorporated itself into almost everything we do, which can often negatively impact a human’s mind. Constant use of electronic devices can deteriorate our health and social skills. In the iris of the eye in the drawing, the I phone represents the pupil of the eye that stay intact, while the iris break apart, which is shown by the jagged lines imitating a crack or shatter of a person’s thoughts or emotions.
The objective of this piece was to expand a small object to a large drawing. The shell chosen had lots of ridges and shaved off edges that made it harder to accurately draw, but highlighting the darker areas by applying more pressure and shading lightly in the whiter areas of the shell helped bring out its depth. Shading in a curvy motion enhanced the closing in of the horn-shaped part of the shell. I tried to reciprocate the delicate nature of the actual shell in my drawing by lightly outlining the pointed edges. The strengths of this piece were the shading of the drawing that imitated the dark and light parts of the shell; however, the weaknesses of the piece were the lack of unity with the top and bottom parts of the drawing, where the bottom part of the shell is overtly darker than the top part.
The intent behind this piece was to show diversity amongst nature with the use of recycled materials making up a bird’s nest and the bird itself. I chose to use birds to represent this diversity because there are millions of species of birds in the world and each one has its unique appearance or trait that makes them stand out from the rest. My bird’s body is made of saran wrap, felt, and buttons, to demonstrate the usage of different materials. I also added various colors of felt at the base of the nest and set on top cloth-covered saran wrap to represent eggs. Finally, I added torn-up shreds of paper to add volume to the contraption and make it look as if the nest had little twigs in it. The meaning behind the title is that on the social media platform, Twitter, people express themselves freely and share their opinions on different topics. I believe that this platform is extremely diverse and since it has the symbol of a bird I thought they related to each other as well.
I followed the double-exposure tutorial to create this piece but used a sunset as the background instead of a mountain range as displayed in the tutorial. I made sure to pick a picture that would closely show the features of my face and have a dull sort of expression to contrast the happiness of the sunset as I wanted my theme to be something related to a dream that imitated reality. The dull expression symbolizes the darkness amongst the light, which signifies that even when everything seems to look good from the outside, there is an underlying sadness that is within.
Since I put on a nice outfit that day, I decided to take a mirror selfie. When I looked back on the picture, I really liked how the lighting hit my face and highlighted the cheek bones and a little of the forehead. The mirror it was taken in had an interesting pattern: overlapping circular shapes like scales. I also wanted the railing of the staircase to appear in the background to show the viewer that I am standing in a house. The black and white nature of the photo has high vignette, low exposure, increase in sharpness, and high grain. These edits made it look more erie and filled with suspense. I wanted viewers to wonder what could conspire after the picture was captured in the empty house with no one around, or so I think.
This image and its title was inspired by my creepy imagination and my younger self with an imaginary friend. Since that friend was only in my imagination, I had a perception of her being quirky, wholesome, and adventurous, which was almost like my personality. In this image, I decided to explore my darker mindset and reflected onto that of my imaginary friend, bringing her back only for this concept. Edits made to the photo were high vignette, very high grain, a little fade, low saturation, very sharpened, and with a slight B&W filter. I hope viewers can imagine their inner demon when they look at this photo.
The title signifies the different versions of length displayed throughout the photo. This includes: the far distance of the body from the mirror, the long gown-like dress, the lengthy mirror, the long door, and the woman’s tall height. All of these observations add to why the woman’s silhouette looks so majestic and proud, yet her body-positioning shows her boredom and loneliness. Tinted lighted postion in the background was tinted lavendar, a lower exposure made the darkness emanate from the foreground, and a high sharpness emphasized the slihouette of the woman’s body.
I was drying dishes and while drying a larger, metal bowl, I found myself looking at my reflection, so I thought why not take a couple pictures with it. I decided to be goofy and make bubbly expressions all around the parameter of the bowl. It made the proportions of my body very diverse with every shot. In the first, my hand with the phone and my hair appears larger than my face. The second shot lengthens my upper-body. Finally, the third one enlarges my stomach area and the bottom-half of my face. These proportions make each picture unique and add to the expressions. I added a green tint to each photo, along with a high fade, moderate grain, and increase in shadows. I this photo series encourages viewers to have fun while doing chores or any daily tasks that could otherwise be boring and routinely.
