Port Weller

We wrote this song about the Earth because we care about our Earth Community. We came together as a class community and used our diverse musical talents to create our masterpiece. The grade 5 students wrote about the earth and we compiled our paragraphs and poems to create lyrics for our song. We worked together through many layers of the creative process.

We accepted the Amplify the Arts challenge and were inspired to use our imaginations to generate some fabulous ideas. We focused and planned how we wanted to express our thoughts about our Earth Community combining it with an Earth Day theme. We started with 4 guitar chords and sang our lyrics with the guitar.

Then, we wrote music notation. We explored all options when writing song lyrics and experimented with different amounts of syllables per line and how long to hold notes for. We explored singing with our voices and then figuring out what notes we were singing.

We produced a preliminary work then with a critical eye we revised and refined our song many times by changing lyrics, changing the tempo, and adding many instruments after we wrote the music notation - saxophone, clarinet, violins, keyboard, djembe drums, maracas, tambourine, guitar. The students who played the saxophone, clarinet, and violin are learning music through the DSBN music teacher who comes in once a week so they were able to use these instruments in our song.

We performed our song on the most perfect sunny day in front of our school in our outdoor classroom in our school community. We watched our video, then reflected upon and evaluated our performance and accepted feedback from peers and teachers of how we can make it more awesome for the next time we present our song.
