"Community is like a Patchwork Quilt"

Mme Stickles' grade 3/4 class - collaborative artwork

Inspired by the work of Bisa Butler and the history of quilting amongst enslaved women in years past, we made connections between the finished quilts and how they represented the community that made them.

Like the stories we heard, students shared items brought from home and found in the art closet at school to each design/create a “square” of our quilt where even though each was different and unique, they all belong and the quilt wouldn’t be complete without any one of them.

Each student then wrote an artist statement on the back of their square identifying the meaning behind the shapes and materials they used to create their square
