In this project, Sancho Hodges and I collaborated to create a new invention to tackle the water crisis in Guatemala. Our assignment was to research a Hispanic country and investigate a problem that was attacking their community, economy, or political situation. We decided to research Guatemala, which has a shortage of clean, accessible water. To eliminate this problem, we created "Gotas de Vida": a portable water filter that runs off of solar energy. We hope that this will help reduce the amount of water pollution, by increasing the amount of clean water for villages. My partner was Melvin H.

In APUSH, we were indivually tasked with researching a marginalized community who faced discrimination in the 20th century. I researched Native Americans and the American Indian Movement during the 1970s. In the 1900s, the government placed stronger control on Indian lands, encouraging Native Americans to leave their reservations. AIM (American Indian Movement) aimed to prevent racial profiling, and monitor how Native Americans were treated. The AIM was created to address the systemic racism American Indians faced such as police brutality, poverty, and discrimination. The 1973 Wounded Knee Protest was a 71-day occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota by the AIM. Many members viewed Richard Wilson, a tribal president, as a corrupt leader. This led to a division in the tribe, which involved armed conflicts and negotiations with the federal law. AIM played a crucial role in developing sovereignty, activism, and reformations for American Indians.
This project was an insightful way for me to understand more about other communities that aren't discussed heavily in history, especially during the 70s. Through my empowerment fist, you can see pictures of Native American protesters, children, and tribe leaders all collectively fighting for their rights. We chose to use the BLM fist as a template to show unity in equal rights for all. To create this fist, I. used Canva.
