Why do people work?

Our guiding question for Quarter 4 PBL was, "Why do people work?"

Check out the video below to hear how one of the students answered the question.

Who works in our community?

The students brainstormed jobs in their community. This is what they came up with.

Oh, No! No Snacks?!?

The kids know when its time to have snack. Today was a little different. When it was snack time, the snacks were gone! Where were they? Who took them? Would we be able to get them back? So, we had a BIG problem and had to come up with a way to solve it. Well, there was an email sent (not really :)) that said that the students had to earn the snacks back by working.

Saving Money to Buy Something You Want

The question was posed to the students, "If you could save your money to buy something, what would you buy?" Check out what the students said they would buy.

Working to Earn Money

The students had to work to earn money to get their snacks back. Here are some pictures of them in action working around the classroom.

Lia is cleaning off the student tables.

Liam and Jayla are getting those pencils sharpened!

Habibah is cleaning off a table. She knows that Ms. Thomas cannot take messy areas.

Neil and Parker are working together to organize the manipulative bins.

Adela and Harrison are making sure that there isn't any trash on our floor.

Ty'lliah is making sure the tables are spic and span!

Lauryn A. is straightening up the students' work area.

Goods & Services

Goods and Services Song

(song to the tune of London Bridges)

"Goods and Services! Goods and Services! What's a good? What's a good? A good is something you can touch. A good is made or can be grown. That's a good, that's a good!

Goods and Services! Goods and Services! What's a service? What's a service? A service is something people do for you. A service is something people do for you. That's a service, that's a service!"

Well, the students know that the main reason people work is purchase things. We had a discussion and sorted the things into goods and services.

And the Decisions Are...

So, now that the students having been learning about why people work they will be producing and selling goods to another kindergarten class. The question was asked, "What would you like to sell?" The class brainstormed a list of goods (see the anchor chart to the left) that they would like to make and sell.

After brainstorming a list of goods they would like to produce, then the decision had to be made, "Which goods would be made?" In order to be fair with choosing, all the names of the goods were written on a post-it note and placed in a brown paper bag. Students were called to select (see pictures below).

Creating Our Business Plans

The students, working in their business groups, began to work on creating their business plans for the goods they were going to produce. Check out pictures of the students during the process and examples of their finished business plans.

Calling All Investors! Investors Needed!

Well, the students have brainstormed goods they want to produce, chosen the top 4 goods that will be produced and sold, picked which work group they will be a part of, completed a business plan and now they need to buy the materials. What? Buy the materials? But, they don't have any money so the question was posed, "How will you get the materials you need without having money to buy them. And the answer is...INVESTORS!!!!

To the right is the letter we sent out to our parents to see if they would be investors.

Making Goods and Advertising

The decisions have been made. The investors have sent in materials and given monetary donations. Now, its time for the students to make their goods and advertise!

Show Us the Money!

It's almost time for the students to sell their goods but before they do, they have to know how to count money, right? They really enjoyed learning about the penny, nickel, dime and quarter and skip counting by 5's, 10's and 25's up to a dollar. They loved these videos! Check them out!

They've put in the work. Now, its time for them to sell their products!

How much money did they make and what will they buy?

The students counted the money they made from selling their goods. They came up with a list of goods they wanted to buy and voted. What did they choose? Look at the last picture to find out! (the winning goods are circled)
