Entry Event: On March 18, 2019, our students realized we didn’t have any snacks in our class cabinet. Oh no! How could this be? The students just returned from the weekend, but no one realized we were out of snacks until that moment. It was brought to our attention that all of the other Kindergarten classes were having the same dilemma. We brainstormed ways to solve this problem and recorded them on an anchor chart. After sharing a few ideas, we decided the best way to receive snacks was to somehow work in order to earn enough money to buy snacks. Our school custodian, Mr. Deshon, needed help cleaning the cafeteria and allowed us to assist him with this job. The students cleaned tables and swept floors to earn money! Problem solved!
Olivia, Jason, Mills, and Maasai were working hard sweeping the cafeteria floors!
Our class did an amazing job cleaning the cafeteria.
London and Mills are pictured here receiving money from Mr. Deshon for their hard work!
Look at them proudly showing off the shiny nickels that they earned! They finally had money to buy snacks!
Our class gathered together and engaged in a group discussion about work. Students shared a common understanding that people work in order to earn money to buy things that they need and want. We discussed collectively the various jobs that people can have. Students tapped into their prior knowledge and shared about jobs they have heard of and made connections to the jobs their family and friends have. The student responses were recorded on an anchor chart.
Students created a small list of items they wanted to buy with our class money. We researched the prices of the items and voted to reach our final decision. Our class decided to save our money to purchase a cake from Publix for our end of the year awards day/ graduation ceremony.
We would like to buy a cake for our class awards day ceremony but we do not have any money... Let's work! Let's start a business to earn our own money! They chose to have three departments within the "Super Scholars Store." They decided they will sell Super Scholar Friendship Bracelets (Jewelry department), Super Slime (Slime department) , and Super Art Work (Art Department)! Students recorded the materials we need to make the items for our store.
Students were given a choice to decide which department they wanted to work in. We have 23 students in our class so each of the three departments could have up to 8 workers. Students took into consideration their talents as well as their interests to help them make a decision. After they decided what department, they began the planning process for their product design. What will I sell? What will it look like (drawing)? How much will it cost?
