What does it mean to volunteer? Why would Drew require you volunteer for 100 hours during your high school career?
"From those to whom much is given, much is expected." I believe in giving back and that my highest purpose is to serve the greater good "for I am a citizen of the world.". To be in service to my school community as a teaching assistant or to serve my community as a volunteer passing out books at a neighborhood recreation center, distributing book bags at back-to-school events at Atlanta's Title I schools, helping to feed metro Atlanta's food-insecure communities as a volunteer with MLK Jr. Day of Service or at the Y's Days of Service fills me with joy. I fill my cup each time I teach a senior citizen how to navigate the technology maze; seeing the light in their eyes when they learn to use their electronic device(s) is priceless. With the Lemelson-MIT grant, the Drew team invented a technological solution to a real-world problem in our community. We formed an after-school team to tackle a problem in service to our community.
For both sides, the giver and receiver, it is a win-win. When I volunteer in service to other people, I add and sharpen my skill set: leadership, problem-solving, collaboration with others, time management, and communication skills while making a real impact in my diverse local community. "iTHINK" I can make a difference. "iTHINK" I do make a difference.
