My topic for my 9th grade art portfolio is "Defense Mechanisms in Nature." I chose this because I love to draw/paint wildlife and I find it fascinating how they can defend themselves. I hope people will gain a greater appreciation for wildlife when they view my artwork. Some of the things I create may even make people feel uncomfortable seeing animals having human-like traits and characteristics.
I plan to use as many principles of design that I can throughout my portfolio. I think there will be a lot of movement in my upcoming pieces because I'm drawing living things. I will incorporate variety in my pieces because I like to have a lot of things to look at in my artwork.
My first finished piece is this display of insects with eyes called "Bug Eyes". The concept of this painting is to show how animals can camouflage themselves and how they can see you but you may not be able to see them. This piece showcases variety because I have a lot of different bugs shown in the painting. I painted this with watered down acrylic paint and I chose to keep it black and white because I think it highlights each different part of the painting.
This is a watercolor portrait of a Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula.) Instead of making it take on a humane trait as I did in many of my other drawings, I decided to just capture a detailed portrait of the plant itself because it has a very fascinating way of defending itself.
This piece shows a bee with a syringe instead of a stinger. It shows the natural defense mechanism of a bee represented with a human invention. The two tools have similar functions, both having sharp tips.
