Art is a creative expression that makes one feel or think something. There are some standards for what art can be, but they are not high. Art should have some thought or meaning behind it, and shouldn't be preferred because of the artist's position in society. We can relate art to many subjects as its expressions encompass the entire human experience. Art can represent historical events, make political comments, utilize scientific or mathematical processes, refer to literary stories or be a literary story, and require knowledge of certain trades in order to make. Art is not limited to visuals, and can also be musical compositions, spoken word poems, and songs.
Mandalas are commonly used by Buddhist monks as a way to assist meditation. As they form the delicate designs, they meditate and quiet their minds, letting them fully focus on thinking of nothing. Aside from Buddhism, which is common in East Asia, the use of mandalas is also present in Hinduism and some Mesoamerican traditional religions. This shows their presence in spiritual practices across multiple world civilizations. A noticeable amount of repetition is seen in most mandalas, as their intricate designs often repeat around the border and use a common color theme. You could easily incorporate an atomic model of some sort into the design of one due to how mandalas heavily work with circles.
This project incorporated the scientific and artistic aspects of STEAM. We included science with the use of the atomic model and electron configuration and we included art with the drawings and coloring representations of an atomic model. I enjoyed doing the coloring, I thought it went well and it made me feel almost childlike- like a kid in a basement art classroom again. In the final stages, I noticed a lack of cohesiveness in the overall piece. My team could have communicated better about our collective ideas for the project. If I was the teacher I would change the AP slides, the project was pretty self-explanatory and adding the slides felt like a little too much research.
Borax is a product of sodium often used for laundry or crafts such as these crystals. Borax is a combination of boron, sodium, and oxygen. Hot water allows for more solute to be dissolved in the solution, making it supersaturated. When the water cools, less , of the solute can be dissolved in the solution, causing the borax to crystallize on the pipe cleaners. My piece is dynamic through the use of 3-d figures and abstract visuals. I decided to crate a sphere out of the medium to the best of my ability, which was not perfect, and thus highlights that human mistakes make art dynamic.
This year we have continued to emphasize the connection of art and science with the element and electron configuration mandalas projects. We have worked with the principles and elements of design with our work with value, linear perspective, and color theory. I have worked hard to create many different drafts during the planning process to explore different paths and options I could choose to incorporate both artistic expression and scientific representation. Art is closely tied with history, and so far in this semester we have studied many historical works that feature specific elements and principles that we are studying. One of my favorite pieces that I personally studied was "Ballet Dancers On The Stage" by Edgar Degas, it was painted in 1883 and I studied the piece to point out specific elements of design.
The use of abstraction in Modernist art started with the Impressionist movement. These artists focused more on the feeling or main points of a real life scene and captured them without the photorealistic ideals held by classical art. In non-European cultures like traditional African art, abstractism was used to highlight features and colors to better tell a story. Graphing and quadratic equations can be used to create abstract shapes and forms. Survey data can be used to learn what objects/emotions/sounds people associate with certain colors to better illustrate abstract ideas. I like to work in a more personally expressive way and move away from being calculating with my artistic expression.
This concert included both classical and jazz techniques on solo harp and with a jazz ensemble. I enjoyed the use of the harp to add to the melody and natural flow jazz has naturally. It truly felt like each piece gave Brandee Younger's expert technique and improvisation time to shine. The addition of vocals in the piece "A Brand New Life" added a sense of relaxation and ease to the overall mood. I noticed techniques such as rolled chords, arpeggios, cadenzas, and harmonics. Her solo pieces were expertly played and I loved the inclusion of her piece "Unrest" which was composed in the context of the George Floyd protest of 2020. When the percussion and bass joined in, it added another dimension to the beauty of the harp's cadenzas and rolled chords.
The Nutcracker is a seasonal ballet that follows a girl named Clara and an animated Nutcracker through a fantastical world after a battle with the Rat King. There are many dances that showcase this world such as the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies and Trepak. I have seen the ballet at the Fox Theater and have seen animated adaptations of the ballet's story.
The piece we are playing is Trepak or Russian Dance. It is a speedy piece that is played in 2/4 but is often conducted in 1 due to the speed of the piece. In the ballet, either a large ensemble or two dancers dance in a Russian style that features a lot of leaps and landing on one's heels. This shows one of the man performances put on for Clara and the Nutcracker as they travel through the Kingdom of Sweets.
This is a classic lullaby used all over the world. I have heard it many times before, but not in its full orchestral arrangement. I enjoyed hearing the full orchestration and how it fleshed out the sound of the piece overall. The harmonies truly complemented the familiar melody, and it gave the piece a warm feel. I am very excited to learn this as an ensemble piece with my peers.
This piece reminds me of montage scenes in a movie in which a team is carrying out a grand heist from an art gallery. The piece is very rushed and it seems the harppart works to accent the melody brought about by the orchestra. The harp part settles in the higher octaves and seems both devious and playful. My personal goal for this piece is to be able to count my rests properly and come in on time based on my counting.
We focused on the vocabulary around and calculations made with polynomials. We learned about things such as degree, which is the highest exponent of a coefficient in a polynomial. We also studied adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing polynomials with the distributive property and FOIL.
Standard: VAHSAH.CR.1 Create works of art that reinforce understanding of the visual and/or contextual aspects of specific art historical eras (e.g. frescoes in the Renaissance, manuscripts in the Medieval period).
Culminating Task: We are going to do a gallery walk to discuss
1. your artistic intentions,
2. the choices you made
3. the solutions you found during the creative process, and
4. the purpose or uses of your piece.
5. How are Henry Moore's sculptures present in your piece?
When I first began my piece, I intended to follow the patterns of Moore's more abstract and impressionistic pieces, specifically excluding his Reclining Figures. I struggled with creating a piece I was proud of within those constraints, so I shifted to approaching the Reclining Figures. My goal with the end result was to create a view of negative space from both a horizontal and bird's eye view. I took inspiration from his 1951 Reclining Figure and drew geometric designs over the entire figure. I struggled with cracking and lack of malleability with the specific clay we used but overcame it with sculpting tools and focusing on smoothing the mentioned cracks. Overall, I found the project a very educational and enjoyable challenge.
Describe how the Neolithic revolution led to injustices within religions, social classes, and between genders. Please provide examples for each analysis.
The Neolithic revolution led to injustices due to the human desire for hierarchy after establishing permanent settlements. This created disparities between the roles of males and females as the stronger males established patriarchy over the women. Over the time of settlement religions formed that encouraged social stratification and influenced acts of hatred in the name of one’s faith. Eventually, the switch from bartering societies to money-based economies created economic classes used to discriminate against others.
Describe early Neolithic technology and inventions. Please provide examples for each analysis.
Early Neolithic technology mainly had to do with agriculture due to it being the source of livelihood for so many permanent settlers. An example of this is the ox-driven iron plow, invented in the ancient Chinese Zhou dynasty. Another invention to do with the Neolithic revolution is the hoe, which was used in the agricultural process, and was thought to have been invented in prehistoric Mesopotamia.
Describe the rise of Interregional trade routes and how that led to the spread of religions. Give examples.
Interregional trade routes, such as the Silk Road that connected China to Western civilizations, assisted the spread of religions and ideologies such as Buddhism and Taoism due to the cultural exchanges that naturally occurred with trade. Cultural exchanges like these led to the origins of religions that used the ideologies of other religions such as Hinduism after the Aryan invasion.
Explain the difference between centralized and decentralized governments. Please give examples of each.
A centralized government has one central power ruling over the entire state or territory without subdividing or separating power into different regions. Centralized governments usually occur in smaller territories and states that are simpler to manage under one ruler. Decentralized governments have many different rulers (as in a confederation or federation) that rule over subdivided regions of a state or territory. Decentralized civilizations include classical Greece, which was made up of democratic city-states. Centralized governments are exemplified by the historic Mongolian Empire, which was usually ruled by one Khan and his advisors.
List and explain six (6) significant terms that you should remember going into Period 1.

Today in class, we worked in our groups to research Ancient Civilizations through a template called G.R.A.P.E.S. This helped us get a snapshot of history at that time and decide upon a narrative we wanted to tell in our play. We decided on the story of Cleopatra to highlight ancient Egypt and Rome.
On this day, we studied plot diagrams and how to construct a compelling story. We applied this knowledge to our Shaping Our World story constructs as our work is on our scripts is ongoing.
