Dear Parents,

Greetings to you!

There is a difference between a learned man and a man of learning. A learned man is tied to the knowledge of the past. A man of learning is curious about the present. Having said that learning begins at home and eventually progresses to schools. How students are taught that’s where it all starts to differ! The education system right now is pushing students towards mediocrity. A star footballer in school is going through the grind of a coaching class to enter IIT. A nature-loving child who loves to paint and draw is sitting in a structured class attending algebra classes which the child detests. True education is about achieving mastery-it is about perfecting each student in their unique way. How do we do that? By paying attention to the inherent talent of each student and that is the difference between the traditional and progressive methods of schooling.

Progressive learning is a pedagogical movement that emphasizes teaching children how to think rather than relying on rote memorization. Traditional education teaches children to learn facts at the expense of understanding what is being taught. For example, a student may be able to recite the different parts of a cell without truly understanding how a cell functions. Progressive learning uses an integrated curriculum to allow students to approach concepts and content from multiple perspectives, deepening their conceptual understanding of a subject. The Student-Led Conferences and Project Based Learning are aimed at making children inquisitive and responsible for their learning.

We at DPS Lava also believe in Equity. We endeavour to build a culture of equity that supports the success of each student, focusing on inclusion and belonging. When students and faculty feel they are welcome, included and belong, it deeply influences them and they can perform at their highest level. We strive to know the background and demographics of our students, staff and community, and we have identified ways in which the school can communicate with each child. The school recognizes, welcomes, values and appreciates this diversity. Each member demonstrates high expectations for all.

While bringing equity in school, I would also want the students to imbibe qualities like equality, honesty, integrity and leadership. The School Student Council was elected by the students this month. I congratulate the school cabinet members for the appointments. A prefect is an official of various different types. The equivalent in Military Terms would be “Front Line Troops”. For some of the students, it is their first exposure to leadership, and of course also the responsibility of leading. So as leaders remember what George Bernard Shaw wrote “Most people see things as they are and say, Why? I dream of things that never were, and say Why Not?” Leadership is, after all, action and not a position. Let their actions, therefore, inspire others to, Dream More, Learn More, Do More and Become More. Be a Leader!

From the earliest days, we knew that it is not possible to do good work with the children without the help of their parents.
