Preparing for Term 4- Years 7-10
The next phase of learning is the phase that starts when the 2022 school year commences. The next unit of learning is the learning that will occur between the start of Term 4 and the end of the 2021 school year.
This scaffold has been designed to help plan the next unit, with the idea that that next unit should be intentionally preparing students for their next phase of learning.
(1) Thinking about the next phase of students’ learning (their next course in your subject/KLA- Term 1 2022), what is essential for students to learn in Term 4 in terms of:
Knowledge
Skills
Learning behaviours?
Consider that this might be different for different groups of students in the same course. What do we need to take into account when making the decision around what is essential?
Year 10 students- senior course choices
Streamed classes may be at different levels of achievement
Students moving into elective courses in Year 9 (potentially finishing up their learning in a KLA?)
(2) When does the next unit of learning begin? Would it be best to start:
in line with the Scope and Sequence?
at the start of Term 4?
day 1 of face-to-face learning?
x number of days/ weeks after returning to face-to-face learning?
Given these considerations, how much teaching time will the next unit have?
(3) What does the next unit of learning look like? Is it:
a modified version of an existing unit of work
a selection of key knowledge/skills/learning behaviours with associated learning experiences
a ‘new’ unit designed to meet the learning needs of students in terms of skills and learning behaviours
able to be accessed by all learners- does it have adequate support and challenge?
(4) As we move through Term 4, what do we need to learn about our students in order to make good decisions about their next phase of learning?
Do we need achievement data to help with class construction?
What information should be available to their next teacher?
(5) Where can we build in assessment to ensure that students’ learning is moving forward, and to assist in reporting?
