In this topic, students continue to develop practical skills with the camera whilst exploring the genre of landscape photography and all it has to offer. Students are encouraged to think conceptually in their representation of ideas about self, culture, beliefs and values. We employ the use of metaphor as a way to communicate meaning and make sense of the world around us. Students are learning how to effectively use compositional devices as key features in communicating with the audience places of significance.

The promise of adventure
An iconic view
In this introductory Photography unit 'Light Moves' students begin to see that 'art is everywhere'. This unit provides students with the opportunity to learn to see and photograph the world around them, not as snapshots, but as photographic works of art. In doing so, students begin to explore lights and darks as compositional devices as well as learning to frame and position the subject matter from a variety of viewpoints. By taking their digital camera off 'automatic' and switching to 'manual' students develop their ability to manipulate light by adjusting ISO, Shutter and Aperture settings (as well as using a tripod) so that they can photograph in virtually any light conditions. Have a look at their creations below.

Shapes and Shadows
In this topic, students investigate the shapes of everyday objects and delve into the technical aspects of digital photography with a focus on the expressive and structural qualities of the medium. Looking not just at the shapes of objects themselves but exploring the spaces in between students are learning to look and focus on the power of effective composition, the manipulation of light, and point of view to create abstract images that convey meanings about the world around them to an audience.
