Lesson 1: At the Shops

Prior Knowledge

Students may have some prior knowledge of spelling and grammar techniques but it is not essential. This unit has been designed so that students with no prior knowledge can acquire reading and writing skills.

Learning Intentions

In this lesson you will:

· identify food words from images,

· transcribe food words to compile a shopping list,

· sequence a shopping list and

· compile a list of names for a social event.

Task 1: Class discussion

Task 3: Supermarket shopping list

Here is an example of a shopping list you might use when you go to a supermarket.

It contains food words you have already come across in Task 2.

Now it's time for you to write your own shopping list.

Write your weekly shopping list in List 1.

Now write your list again into List 2.

This time, write the food in the order that they are displayed in the supermarket.

Task 4: Food categories

Sort these foods in the correct category.

Task 5: Other lists
