One of the main causes of conflict are the emotions of anger, frustration, resentment, or fear. You want or need to be acknowledged and validated. One of the main ways you can help someone feel heard or understood is through empathy. When you empathize with someone, you acknowledge their feelings and validate their experience, without judging or blaming. Similarly, when you receive empathy from someone, you can feel calmer and more relaxed, and less threatened. By reducing the intensity of negative emotions, empathy can help you and the other person focus on the problem, rather than the person, and avoid escalation of aggression.
Another benefit of empathy is that it can help you increase the trust and respect between you and the other person. Trust is the belief that the other person is honest, reliable and has the best interests at heart. Respect is the recognition that the other has value, dignity, and rights. When you empathize with someone, you are showing them that you care and are willing to listen to their point of view. Remember empathy is a cognitive process, we must make the choice whether to engage in it or not. Jesus chose to have empathy for us, shouldn’t we have the same courtesy?
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” -- John 13:34-35
I pray that everyone has a relaxing and happy Easter break!
