Dominican admits candidates to its multiple subject or single subject internship programs only those candidates who hold a baccalaureate or higher degree. It carefully screens all applications and transfer requests to ensure that it has received documentation of degree in an official transcript.
Admission - see MS in Education: Curriculum & Instruction
To be admitted to the internship program and to assume daily student teaching responsibilities, all multiple and single subject candidates must provide evidence of passing the CSET in the appropriate field, or having completed a subject matter preparation program in the appropriate field.

Dominican and its partner districts for internships participate in the North Coast School of Education (NCSOE), Intern Support and Supervision (ISSP) [a few interns teach in San Francisco and therefore participate in the San Francisco Unified School District Intern Program]. Districts and universities participating in an internship program adhere to all requirements in state law and provisions and regulations set forth for teacher preparation programs by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Roles and responsibilities for the university, school district and site administrator, university supervisor, NCSOE, and support providers are clearly specified. These include the districts’ responsibility to provide a detailed professional development plan for each intern employed, with the provisions for an annual evaluation, a course completion plan, and any additionally required instruction specific to child development and teaching methods and/or addressing the needs of students who are bilingual.

(a) Supervision of Dominican interns is a shared responsibility between the partner district and Dominican. Each provides a supervisor to work with each intern. In the district, the school administrator is responsible for assigning a support provider to work with each intern. This support provider is typically an on-site experienced teacher, in the same subject area or grade level as the intern. The support provider is expected to meet at least one hour each week with his/her intern.
Dominican assigns a university supervisor to each intern who is teaching on a Dominican-recommended internship credential. These assignments are the responsibility of individual program directors, who are notified by the credential analyst when an internship credential has been processed. A university supervisor observes each intern weekly during the first semester of internship and 6 times during each subsequent semester of internship. The first semester observation expectation for interns is equivalent to the supervision expectations for student teachers and the pay is equivalent to the supervision of one student teacher; the pay in subsequent semesters is equal to half of the pay for supervising one student teacher.
(b) Dominican and its partner districts for internships participate in the North Coast School of Education (NCSOE), Intern Support and Supervision (ISSP) [a few interns teach in San Francisco and therefore participate in the San Francisco Unified School District Intern Program], which provides support provider training and stipends for participants. None of Dominican’s partner districts for internships reduce an intern’s salary in order to provide on-site supervision of our interns.

All candidates interested in an internship teaching assignment are advised that their teaching assignment must be appropriate to the credential they are seeking. Our credential analysts check the match between teaching assignment and credential authorization when processing the internship credential recommendation. Candidates who have a discrepancy between the two are referred to their program director for further advising.

Through its participation in the North Coast School of Education (NCSOE), Intern Support and Supervision (ISSP), Dominican has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with all public school districts and county offices of education in which its intern teachers are assigned.

Teacher Preparation Handbook--Internship Program Requirements heading, final paragraph
Dominican interns are hired when a vacancy occurs and a certificated teacher is not available. The majority of our interns are in teaching fields with limited availability of qualified certificated teachers, primarily in math, science, and special education. No Dominican intern displaces a certificated teacher.
Dominican initiated intern programs in 2000 at the request of and in partnership with three major districts in Solano County. Since that time, our intern programs have extended into Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake and San Francisco counties at the request of district personnel directors, to assist them in meeting employment needs. We partner with these districts through the North Coast School of Education (NCSOE), Intern Support and Supervision (ISSP), and the San Francisco Unified School District Intern Program.
