Dominican’s multiple and single subject credential programs are equivalent to no more than one year of full-time study at the university. The total number of units required for each program is as follows:
Candidates enrolled in the multiple subject and single subject credential programs enroll in four foundation courses (12 semester units) and three pedagogy and reflective practice courses (12 units) prior to or concurrently with the beginning supervised student teaching in schools. The courses are:

Candidates for all credentials are required to pass a course in entitled Differentiating Instruction for Inclusive Classrooms (4 semester units), in which they learn strategies for developing students’ English language skills. In addition, all Multiple Subject candidates take a reading course (Teaching Reading in Elementary Schools [4 semester units]), or Single Subject candidates take Literacy Across the Curriculum [4 semester units]), which includes literacy strategies for developing English language skills.
Dominican offers Education Studies/Teacher Education major for undergraduates who wish to complete their baccalaureate degree in Education Studies and a preliminary multiple subject teaching credential in four years.
Dominican requires that all applicants to its credential programs demonstrate their responsibility toward meeting the subject matter requirement by one of the following means:
By examination
The candidate provides evidence of having passed the appropriate subject matter examination(s).
The candidate provides evidence of having attempted the appropriate subject matter examination(s).
The candidate provides evidence of registration for the next scheduled examination.
By subject-matter preparation
The candidate provides evidence of having completed a Commission-approved subject-matter preparation program.
Teacher Preparation Handbook - Admission to Supervised Teaching
To be admitted to student teaching and to assume daily student teaching responsibilities, all multiple and single subject candidates must provide evidence of passing the CSET in the appropriate field, or having completed a subject matter preparation program in the appropriate field.
Prior to recommending a candidate for a preliminary teaching credential, a credential analyst ensures that each candidate has completed and provided evidence of all of the following:
Possession of a baccalaureate or higher degree other than in professional education from a regionally accredited institution
Passage of the basic skills requirement
Completion of an accredited professional preparation program
Completion of the subject matter requirement
Demonstration of knowledge of the principles and provisions of the Constitution of the United States
Passage of the California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA)
Passage of the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) [for multiple subject and education specialist candidates only]
