Statement:
The Department of Education recruits and develops educators with moral and ethical purpose. The Marin Teachers of Color (TOC) Scholarship benefits underrepresented students, with preference given to African American and Latinx students living in Marin or the East Bay who intend to teach, or currently teach, at a Marin County and East Bay public school and are enrolled in the Teaching Credential portion of the MS Education degree. The scholarship award is renewable while the student is completing the Teaching Credential courses provided the student maintains a 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average. The scholarship amount is 50% of tuition applicable while completing credential coursework.
Graduates of the teacher credential program are reflective practitioners who demonstrate ethical purpose, apply best practices, and use intercultural knowledge to serve the needs of a diverse and global society. Course and fieldwork are informed by social justice standards and anti-bias educational theories and practice. Faculty ensure that the needs of 21st century students are addressed through skills development in communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, as well as information, media and technology skills. Students begin with foundational knowledge in the 21st century skills, then progress to subject-specific pedagogies and reflective classroom practice. Throughout the process, students are supported by multiple educational experts including university supervisors and resident mentors, content coaches, directing teachers in the K-12 schools, and staff and faculty committed to guiding students through the credentialing process. Often, students are later hired at the schools in which they student taught, reflecting the quality preparation received in the credential program. Additionally, students can return to complete their MS in Education in two semesters, furthering their praxis as reflective and inclusive educators.
