The Executive Board serves as the primary leadership body of the organization, responsible for setting the vision, mission, and strategic direction for the entire academic year. Led by the President and supported by four Executive Vice Presidents, they oversee all divisions and ensure alignment with university policies and organizational goals. They also represent BMS to internal and external stakeholders and make final decisions on major organizational matters.
As a member of the Executive Board, what key leadership skills have you leveraged to drive meaningful change within the organization? Can you share a specific example of how this change contributed to the organization’s mission of empowering excellence?
As a member of the Executive Board, I believe one of the most important traits to develop is the ability to strategize quickly yet empathetically. No matter how well you plan, unpredictable challenges will inevitably arise—affecting not only logistical aspects but also taking an emotional toll on your members. Learning to respond with both speed and compassion allows you to lead more effectively and support your team through difficulties. Admittedly as president, it has been difficult to balance being hands-off to build my officers’ independence. Despite this, I hope my officers' know that my doors would always be open if they need any assistance and through this I hope I have given them the opportunity to elevate their excellence.
There are many skills that make us great leaders today, but I believe leading with purpose is what truly sets us apart to become enablers of growth. In the Academics and Career Development division, we uphold a clear purpose—providing the tools and inspiration needed to spark transformative change in students’ academic and professional journeys. By helping students navigate college life through career workshops, academic reviewers, consultation sessions and corporate exposure, we embody what it means to be purpose-driven leaders. I always strive to find the good in what I do, and it is this mindset that continuously drives me toward fulfilling excellence.
One key leadership skill I have leveraged is creative direction, which allowed me to guide how BMS communicates its story. The BMS features highlight for every event is a concrete example, ensuring that each initiative is documented and amplified in a way that reflects the organization’s identity. This consistent storytelling bridged connections across members and audiences while giving recognition to collective efforts. In turn, it contributed to BMS’s mission of empowering excellence by showcasing how every project and achievement upholds the organization’s standards.
As a member of the Executive Board, I focused on empowerment, personal development, and strategic delegation to bring changes and build leadership capabilities within the organization. By entrusting key responsibilities to our BMS leaders, all while providing guidance and setting expectations, we were able to foster a sense of ownership and accountability among our officers. This not only strengthened our officers’ confidence but also aligned with our mission of elevating excellence through shared leadership.
As part of the Executive Board, I’ve leaned into being observant, adaptable, and honest in how I lead. I try to create a space where others feel comfortable speaking up and know they’re supported. I guide them through values I hold deeply, such as being accountable, acting responsibly, and extending grace when things don’t go as planned. There are moments when those I work with struggle to follow through, and instead of being critical, I respond with patience and focus on helping them move forward. I believe meaningful change begins when people feel safe, seen, and supported to grow at their own pace.
