Dr. Juan Calderon Bustillo completed his 5 year BSc or ("Licenciatura") in Physics in 2011 at the University of Santiago de Compostela, followed by a Masters of Advanced Study in Mathematics (a.k.a Part III of the Mathematical Tripos) from the University of Cambridge in 2012.
Afterwards, he obtained his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Balearic Islands last 2015 , and held two postdoctoral positions at the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) and Monash University (Australia) before joining the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a Research Assistant Professor.
He applies data analysis techniques to decipher the information encoded in gravitational-wave signals and understand the properties of black holes and extreme gravity. His research interests include searching for black hole collisions in Advanced LIGO data, test Einstein's theory of General Relativity and extract astrophysical information from black-hole and neutron-star collisions.
Currently, Dr. Bustillo is a gravitational-wave astronomer at the Galician Institute of High Energy Physics of the University of Santiago de Compostela, where he holds a "La Caixa" Junior Leader Fellowship and is a Marie Curie Fellow.
