Attendance is required for all performances. Each member of the organization is important and has a unique contribution to make toward a greater display of musical sound and positive attitude of the group. Since many others depend on this contribution, it becomes disruptive when you are missing or not up to the best of your ability.
IF YOU HAVE A CONFLICT, you MUST submit the conflict IN WRITING a minimum of THREE WEEKS prior to the event or as a medical/family emergency arises. The directors and administration will review the conflict to determine whether or not the absence will be excused. An excused absence will require the student to complete an alternate project at the director’s discretion.
Work, babysitting, concert tickets, not having a ride, sports practice, or forgetting are NOT acceptable excuses for missing a concert. Your grade will be drastically affected for any unexcused absence from a performance. In the event of an emergency such as death or illness, your parents/guardians must submit a written excuse. You may then be required to complete a make-up assignment or project as a result of your absence. The director will determine the required task.
To earn full credit for concert attendance, a student must:
Arrive at the appropriate area on time and check in (if required).
Exhibit appropriate rehearsal technique during warm-ups (if required).
Wear appropriate attire/outfit as assigned by the director. Dresses, pants, and gowns may require hemming and/or other minor alterations; it is the student’s responsibility to see that this is done appropriately and in a timely fashion. Wardrobe closets containing performance attire will be locked except during designated pick-up times. Students must plan accordingly.
Pay strict attention to the director.
Participate as an appropriate audience member when not performing (there is no talking during any performance.)
Return all folders and materials in a timely fashion.
NOTE: Ensemble awards (letters, patches, pins, etc.) as well as senior awards are dependent upon complete, appropriate participation in rehearsals and performances. Failure to make any required performance and/or appropriate participation in rehearsals may result in the loss of your award. Under extenuating circumstances, and at the directors’ exclusive discretion, the student may maintain award eligibility if the student only missed one required performance. Extenuating circumstances may include:
1. a medical or non-medical family emergency (documentation must be provided immediately upon return from the missed performance)
2. a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity (to be determined by the director)
3. a previous commitment of great magnitude provided that the director receives written notification within 48 hours after the student receives notice of the performance
4. participation in a BNHS conference athletic or non-athletic event at the regional, sectional, or state-level OR participation in a BNHS IHSA NIC-10 conference athletic or non-athletic event in which your participation will likely determine BNHS’ ability to participate at the regional level or greater.
NOTE: Failure to complete the makeup assignment for an excused absence from a performance may result in the forfeiture of ensemble and/or senior awards.
