Why Did They Decide to Build DHS?
As the Town of Deerfield grew, so did it's population of high school goers. Instead of having 3000-4000 people in one building, the board decided to build a new school in Deerfield so each school would only have 1500-2000 students
By having this smaller number of students in a single school, they thought that they could do a better job at educating students and the student who lived in Deerfield would not have to make as much of a trip to school everyday
The Building Process
The school was finished being built on December 11, 1960
The school had the second elevator ever in Deerfield
The school had 4 gyms and 3 of them could be divided in half creating 7 total
The pool was opened on January 1, 1961 and was open to the public on certain nights
Mr."Flip", The First Principle
Mr.Phillipi was not your average harsh and scorn principle of the time. He was kindhearted and enthusiastic about his school.
He was born and raised in Milwaukee and went to the university of Wisconsin. He first studied criminology in hopes of being a prison warden, but changed his career path to become an educator. He came to Highland Park High School where he taught American History and was the Varsity football offensive line coach.
He also established a sociology course in Highland Park High School
He was offered the position of Principle at the brand new Deerfield High school. He said that DHS was the best thing ever to happen to him. He proclaimed that if was the nicest, most beautiful building he had ever been in. He also said that he is, "Pleased as Punch" with the staff, student body, and the way they cooperated together.
Overall he was the kind of person that would define DHS as the amazing school it is.
