The history of the special ed program at DHS is very unclear, as for in the yearbook and Deerprints there is no information about the program, however, in yearbooks from the early 70s include images of teachers who are listed in under the Special Education Department. In addition, in a 1994 Deerprints, there was tributes to retiring teachers, including one who has taught special ed for 11 years at DHS. This indicates that DHS had some sort of special ed program, but the specifics of the program are unknown.
It was not until 2007 that DHS had a club similar to what Warrior Buddies. The club was first called Council for Exceptional Children, but the name was changed to Best Buddies the following year. The club working to increase inclusion and participation in activities for students of all abilities, forming friendships with the students.
