How did you derive your student-centered goals and action steps? How did the teachers, students, and families contribute to your plan?
The student-centered goals and action steps laid out in the Professional Learning Plan (PLP) were carefully thought out and established by the school leadership team. The goals and action steps were planned according to alignment with district goals set by the new strategic operating plan for 2021-2026 along with established expectations for the execution and success of VILS initiatives such as digital citizenship and digital collaboration.
What is your progress on the action steps? Have you had to modify or change your course of action (based on data)?
Throughout our first year in VILS, our progress supports our initial expectations and goals. To date, we have made efforts to run a schoolwide digital citizenship initiative and had all of our students engage in a series of digital citizenship lessons during the spring. The digital citizenship lessons also included baseline and summative assessments to track student growth. Additionally, we have participated in and coordinated opportunities for staff to engage in valuable professional learning around providing more opportunities for student digital collaboration. Teachers continue to get ongoing support through individual and small group coaching and classroom demonstrations from the VILS Coach.
Does instruction reflect that teachers understand how different uses of technology support teaching and learning goals?
As evidenced through photos and other artifacts in this portfolio, data gathered through classroom walkthroughs and observations show that instruction does indeed reflect teachers' understanding of how technology and digital learning can support student teaching and learning goals. So far this year, we have seen evidence of teachers taking more risks and using instructional technology tools that they have never used before. We are also noticing a greater amount of opportunities for student collaboration and content creation.
How does the campus leadership team model and collaborate with each other to support campus goals?
The school leadership team consists of the principal, assistant principal, house leaders, instructional coach, dean of students, subject area leaders, and anyone else who wishes to join. The team meets weekly to discuss ways to work toward school goals and initiatives. The leadership team has implemented best practices gained from leadership calls by scheduling and facilitating committee meetings and Professional Learning Communities (PLC) to support future-ready initiatives and opportunities for digital learning and collaboration.
How does the district leadership team innovate and collaborate to ensure long-term sustainable practices?
The Norwalk Public Schools district leadership team has supported innovation and creativity by setting it as one of their highest values as part of a newly created strategic operating plan for 2021-2026. A district-level position known as Assistant Superintendent for Digital Learning and Innovation was created to support many technology and future-focused initiatives across the district.
Are technology use policies well documented, understood by both students and teachers, and reinforced? Have VILS IT management practices been incorporated districtwide?
Technology use policies and practices such as the VILS Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Appropriate Usage Policy (AUP) were communicated to families and students upon either their initial participation in VILS or as part of their registration process upon enrollment at WRMS. They are reinforced at WRMS through messages from administrators during live morning announcements and by teachers during homeroom and advisory/intervention/enrichment sessions. The V ILS coach spoke at a 6th-grade assembly and during a live whole-school broadcast about checking and maintaining devices.
For sustainability purposes, we anticipate long-term success since we had a 1-to-1 device program in existence prior to our participation in VILS. Additionally, our students and teachers will continue to grow and develop through our focus on digital citizenship and digital collaboration. The VILS Coach and IT Technician work collaboratively with the school adminstrators, technology liaison, front office staff, and school counselors to document, review, and update policies and practices on an ongoing basis.
