Day Users: WRMS does not currently have day users. Out of the entire student body, only 3 students do not have VILS devices due to personal reasons. There are currently 713 students who actively use their VILS device.
Overall, WRMS has done an admirable job of handling devices. However, when devices are lost, our tracking system typically allows for the safe return of the device to the student within a few days. Additionally, the repair ticketing process is straightforward and devices are returned quickly even after being sent for repair.
The inventory data and data usage reports have guided campus-wide culture by allowing us to implement a better system for tracking student device distribution, improving our system for MOU completion, device distribution, and onboarding for new students, and a better system for identifying specific repair issues.
How are parents, students, and teachers supported on a consistent basis on digital safety? How do you foster student ownership with device and data usage?
The entire WRMS community participated in a whole-school digital citizenship activity at the start of the 2021-2022 school year. The goals of the activity were to build a strong sense of responsibility and ownership over the new VILS devices, as well as to begin to instill values for proper online etiquette.
The digital learning department created an NPS-aligned set of curricular standards and lessons for digital citizenship by adapting CASEL, Common Sense, and ISTE standards. During March of 2022, students took a baseline digital citizenship assessment and began participating in grade-level-aligned digital citizenship lessons throughout the months of April and May. Their growth has been tracked by a summative assessment given in early June.
What systems do you have in place to support repairs and replacements? If none, how can you modify your systems? How do you ensure norms around device usage and care are widely followed? Are students using their devices outside the classroom? How has that impacted student learning?
At WRMS, device repairs are reported to homeroom teachers who input repair tickets and deliver devices to the school's technology liaison. The liaison communicates with the school-based IT Technician who will handle the repair process. The technician keeps a database of devices that come in for repairs, need to be sent out for repair, and the specific repair issue listed on each ticket. Students who must temporarily surrender their VILS device for repairs are provided a loaner device.
Students do transport their devices to and from school and home. Many of our students use their devices outside the classroom and at home. Several of our students and their families rely on the Verizon data on their devices when they lack wireless internet connectivity at home.
Drs. Reynolds and Kreiness tag-teamed to live stream to the entire school to explain to staff and students why/how to conduct a pre-collection device check so we can avoid surprises during the day of our roll-in at the end of the school year
How is the student tech team serving in a leadership role on campus? Supporting IT help tickets? Have the students created videos, flyers, or mini sessions to support their peers with basic troubleshooting?
The WRMS Student Tech Team is still being formed and the responsibilities of its members are still being established. However, the following benefits of membership for students who participate on the STT are:
#1 Student Leadership
Tech teams should be based on a foundation of student leadership and self-directed learning. Implementing a student tech team creates a unique learning and leadership opportunity in a school.
#2 Technology Skill-Building
Developing technology skills is a natural result of student-directed learning. Many student tech team leaders report that giving students the freedom to explore and work hands-on with technology results in robust skill development.
#3 Service Time
Students who are also part of the WRMS chapter of the National Junior Honor Society are obligated to complete service hours. Participation on the Student Tech Team and time spent in meeting and completing hands-on activities can be used to fulfill this requirement. If a STT member is a part of any team, club or organization that requires them to volunteer, then being a member of the STT will count towards those hours.
