What would you consider to be your biggest challenges this year and how did you overcome them?
In the early part of the school year, we were challenged by the fact that the VILS Coach was being shared across multiple schools. This issue was solved in November of 2021 by the hiring of a new coach which allowed for them to be dedicated to working at WRMS every day. We were also challenged with administrators overwhelmed with inventorying and tracking VILS devices and repairs. We worked on creating better spreadsheets and practices for newly enrolled students to get their device quickly, for repairs to happen more quickly, and for tech issues to be tracked in a more detailed manner.
How will these takeaways affect the sustainability of this program?
These solutions and improved systems will allow for greater collaboration between and among the staff, including the VILS Coach, IT Technician, and school administration. They will aid in the sustainability of this program by alleviating overwhelm and providing more opportunities for staff to concentrate on the most important aspects of the VILD program - promoting growth in and future-focused opportunities for our students.
What would you consider to be your biggest successes this year and why?
So far this school year, our greatest successes include providing opportunities for our entire school community to actively engage in digital citizenship activities, increasing opportunities for teacher professional growth through one-on-one and small group coaching, and dramatically increasing opportunities for student voice and choice as well as digital collaboration and content creation and publication.
How do your successes align with your professional learning plan?
These successes are directly aligned to PLP goals such as digital citizenship and digital collaboration. While there are ongoing efforts to further accomplish these goals, we are proud of the work that has already been done this year to address these important priorities. Along with the NPS strategic plan, WRMS has prioritized such goals and, therefore, these successes mean that our school and our district are on our way to realizing the vision we have set for ourselves.
How has the campus culture transformed due to this program? How do you know?
In the first half of the year, despite challenges brought about by the global pandemic, the VILS program and devices have provided some stability to our students and their families through consistent connectivity and access. Being part of the VILS program has helped bring about noticeable instructional transformation as we can observe students engaged in digital activities and through digital collaboration as well as we have been able to see more student creativity through the opportunities they have been given to produce content rather than to simply consume it.
What needs to change (areas of growth) for your continuous growth in the program? Why and how?
Since our VILS Coach has only been back at WRMS for two months, we are still seeking to improve opportunities for them to lead professional learning sessions, observe and coach teachers, and to visit classrooms and participate in lessons and activities.
