Tutorials

The following 3 tutorials will be held jointly with AVI 2022 on Monday June 06 and Tuesday June 07.

Open Research Data and Analysis - How to Implement and Publish in European Project Context

June 06 - Morning

Open data is increasingly important in European research projects due to personal or organizational commitment to open data, such as Horizon funding requirements. This tutorial begins with a review of how H2020 guidelines have been met in example projects and publications, and continues with a practical demonstration of how both research processes and research data can be processed and published openly with RStudio, RMarkdown, and Zenodo pipeline. We will conclude with a shared discussion of current challenges and exceptions to open publishing.

No previous experience of R is required, but it is recommended that participants pre-install a current version of R and RStudio.

More info will be available before the conference at the tutorial website.

Haptics to Enrich Visual Interfaces: From Theory to Prototyping

June 06 - Full day

From petting a dog, checking the temperature of bathwater, to assembling complex machines, the haptic perception of our body strongly contributes to our experience and understanding of the surrounding physical world. While today's Virtual or Mixed Reality systems can provide convincing visual and auditory worlds, they largely ignore the haptic properties necessary to create a convincing virtual environment. In recent years, research proposed a large variety of different approaches to overcome this limitation of today's systems. These range from handheld or worn devices, grounded and ungrounded encounter-type interfaces, to electronic stimulation applied directly to muscles (EMS) or even pseudo-haptic feedback elicited solely by sensory illusions.

This tutorial will be a mix of lecture, activities and prototyping. We will start with the physiological aspects of how humans feel and provide an overview of current trends in research on haptic rendering. We will continue this by showing how haptics can be utilized to change user’s perceptions. Finally, we demonstrate how to manipulate haptic perception using sensory illusions, such as pseudo-haptic feedback.

During activities we will provide tasks where the participants will have hands-on experiences with haptic phenomenons, try out various haptic devices, ideation sessions and also create haptic prototypes.

More info is available on the tutorial website.

Collaborative Sketching with Tangibles: Let's Stop Soulless Meetings

June 07 - Morning

During meetings, one person is often the owner of the whiteboard or PowerPoint to sketch the problem or idea. This person commonly “owns” the meeting leading to passive meeting moments for others. In this course, we will bring the whiteboard to the table to start with collaborative sketching. By also using tangibles, a topic can be discussed in a more interactive and efficient way.

Participants will learn how to discuss an idea or problem by means of collaborative sketching combined with tangibles. The techniques will empower participants to change passive meetings to true collaborative and interactive moments. They will moreover learn how to apply storytelling, draw sketches as a story blueprint and use tangibles (Playmobil and 3D printed artefacts) to efficiently tell their story to the group. This story is then used to start an interactive discussion where collaborative sketching with tangibles is introduced. During this collaborative activity, communication through tangibles is also used as a way to express one’s opinion in a neutral way. We will also learn how to apply the techniques in micro-communications such as coffee machine talks. Participants will thereby develop their professional soft skills in the communication of complex topics and in moderating a collaborative and interactive meeting.

The course will also be given at CHI 2022.

More info will be available soon.
