CULTIVATING A LOVE FOR READING: SAN BARTOLOME HIGH SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS CATCH-UP FRIDAYS AND DEAR PROGRAM

"Fostering Literacy and a Lifelong Love for Learning"

On the 12th of January 2024, San Bartolome High School embarked on an exciting journey to enhance literacy skills and instill a passion for reading among its students through the implementation of the Department of Education’s Catch-Up Fridays and "Drop Everything And Read" (DEAR) program, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Education. This program, designed to encourage students to make reading a regular part of their lives, has been warmly embraced by both educators and students at San Bartolome High School.

The DEAR program, which calls for dedicated reading time during the school day, is a proactive step towards addressing literacy challenges and promoting a culture of reading. The initiative aims not only to improve students' reading skills but also to foster a love for literature and a habit of lifelong learning.

Dr. Anita S. Bohol, the dedicated principal of San Bartolome High School, took the lead in championing the DEAR program within the school. The teachers have responded to Dr. Bohol’s call in promoting literacy and reading to the students in their respective classes and making the day fulfilling in the pursuit of academic excellence through literacy.

Students at San Bartolome High School have proven to be attentive participants in the DEAR program. During dedicated reading sessions, classrooms buzz with a quiet energy as students immerse themselves in books, magazines, and various reading materials. The program has not only enhanced literacy skills but has also created a positive and focused atmosphere within the school.

The benefits of the DEAR program extend beyond the academic realm. By promoting regular reading, the initiative aims to develop critical thinking skills, enhance vocabulary, and broaden students' perspectives. Additionally, fostering a love for reading contributes to the overall well-being and intellectual growth of students. As San Bartolome High School continues to champion the DEAR program, it remains committed to creating an environment where students not only excel academically but also develop a lifelong love for learning through the enriching world of literature. The DEAR initiative is a testament to the school's dedication to providing a holistic education that goes beyond textbooks, nurturing well-rounded individuals who are equipped for success in both academia and life.
