Mahay Integrated Secondary School is located in the swampland areas interconnected with the waterways joined by the Agusan River identified as a danger zones, river banks, and flood-prone areas in Butuan City, is a 5 kilometers distance from the foot of the Magsaysay Bridges beneath the heart of the city in Rizal Park now Guingona Park with three (3) small concreted building , and six 6) makeshift classroom lies where 17 teachers at present and lead by a school head, teaches a class of 413 students from Grade 7 to Grade 12.
It is accessible by riding a habal-habal motorcycle as there were no other means of transportation used in going to school station or you have to rode your own motorbike as mostly male teachers used to do. From the city proper to school location this will take 5 kilometers.
The Institutionalization of public-school system carries the mandates of providing quality, accessible, relevant and liberating education. Section 1 of the 1987 Philippine constitution states that the State shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all.
Sprawled on a 5,391 square meters land in the Mahay Integrated Secondary School in Barangay Mahay, Butuan City. It holds the distinction of being the sole public secondary school in Barangay Mahay, Butuan City. It was established to cater to the educational needs of the relocated families from Barangay Buhangin, Baan Riverside, Mahogany, Agao & Barangay Tandang Sora, and to mold the young people of Barangay Mahay and its neighboring Barangays. By Virtue of DepEd Authority, Mahay ISS started its operation in June 2012 with an initial enrolment of 26 students in the first, year level with Mr. Edgardo B. Trujelio as first Secondary School teacher. The original classroom of Mahay ISS was the office of the school elementary principal and the covered court if the principal has a visitors. To meet the educational demand of the rapidly increasing students population every year, the school updated its physical facilities. In 2014 the elementary Bagong Lipunan building was given to Mahay ISS and they utilized school building of academic classes, five and one room for faculty & administration building. In 2015 Mrs. Merlinda L. Bollozos assign as first School Head of Mahay ISS until 2019. While on July 2019 Mr. Peterson A. Oropa replace Mrs. Merlinda L. Bollozos as school head. At present Mahay ISS has 18 faculty members one school head and attend to more than 400 students.
Mahay Integrated Secondary School also intensifies its program on alternative learning system for out-of-school youth and adult learners, whose end-goal in to provide basic education along with skills development, knowledge expansion and with values formation for the learners to become caring, self- reliant, productive and patriotic citizens. With these efforts along with support of the local government Unit of Mahay Barangay Council learners can now have better access to education. The concerted efforts of Local government unit and the Division Office of Butuan City, makes the governance of basic education feasible as it is translated into programs, projects and services developed, adapted and offered to fit local needs thereby no children in Barangay Mahay will be left behind.
