Maguinda Barrio High School was established during the late 1960s with Agusan High School as the mother School. However, in an arrangement made by the community headed by Barrio Captain Santiago B. Ecleo, Sr., and Butuan City Colleges, the School's administration and the name was changed to Butuan City Colleges-Maguinda High School Annex. Subsequently, in 1974, the School was absorbed by the Mindanao State University under its external units and once again changed the name into Mindanao State University-Maguinda Agricultural High School. Unfortunately, disagreements cropped up and the university's supervision and administration of the school ended in March 1983.
Moreover, the community's quest for secondary education continues and by this time Maguinda Barangay High School was revived under the administration and supervision of the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports. And sometime in the mid-1990s, the School is renamed into what it is today, MAGUINDA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.
Maguinda National High School has a total land area of six [6] hectares, the only School throughout the Division of Butuan City with the widest area of school site sufficient for crop production, sports, and BSP/GSP activities, the tree growing, and most specifically coconut plantation. The school site is donated by an NGO, CRAE-KRAEI-KRAEFI through its Supreme Founder/National President, Datu Santiago B. Ecleo, Sr. Provided, likewise, Deed of Donation was signed by Datu Santiago A. Ecleo, Jr. in 1987, in consideration and in its desire to uplift the educational status of the school children in the area and in consonance with Rizal's vision that 'Through Education Our Motherland Receives Light'. This organization existed before the making of the place to a Barangay. Presently, Land Titling in the name of the School is in the process.
