Announcement: The National Uploading and Validation of the WASH in Schools (WinS) Program for SY 2025-2026 is now open.
The Alternative Learning System (ALS) is a parallel learning system in the Philippines, implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd), that provides a pathway for out-of-school children, youth, and adults to complete basic education. ALS offers non-formal education programs, including the Basic Literacy Program and the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Program, which allows learners to earn elementary and high school diplomas.
What is ALS?
Alternative to Formal Education:
ALS is a non-formal education program designed for those who have not completed, or cannot access, formal schooling.
Flexible Learning:
It provides a flexible learning environment, allowing learners to study at their own pace and schedule.
Target Learners:
ALS caters to out-of-school children, youth, and adults who want to acquire basic literacy skills or earn equivalent certificates for elementary and high school.
Key Features of ALS:
Non-Formal Education:
ALS programs are not part of the formal school system but are recognized by DepEd.
Modular Learning:
ALS typically uses a module-based approach where learners work through self-instructional materials.
Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E):
This program allows learners to take exams and earn certificates equivalent to formal elementary and high school diplomas.
ALS Programs:
Basic Literacy Program (BLP): Focuses on developing basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Program: Provides an alternative pathway for learners to complete elementary and high school education.
ALS-EST:
Education and Skills Training Program: ALS-EST is a specific variant of ALS that integrates technical-vocational skills training into the curriculum.
Pilot Program: It is currently in its pilot phase, with 98 implementing schools.
Focus on Employability: ALS-EST aims to equip learners with skills for employment and livelihood opportunities.
DepEd's Role:
Bureau of Alternative Education (BAE): DepEd established the BAE to oversee and implement the ALS program.
Strengthening ALS: The BAE aims to strengthen and expand ALS to reach more out-of-school youth and adults.
